OVERVIEW
ENCOUNTERS is an annual event held as part of a support program to foster media artists by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Transcription is an installation work by artist Ayumu Nagamatsu, presented within the Generative Art Project, a collaborative program of ENCOUNTERS.
Exhibited on the 4th floor of the TODA BUILDING, the piece focuses on the "rhythms" embedded in real-time external data, such as urban activity and weather conditions. Through a dynamic display on a 45-meter projection wall, it visualizes the overlapping and ever-changing movements of the city over time.
RESPONSIBILITIES
We were responsible for technical direction in this project.
The first step was to develop a feasible plan that balanced the artist’s vision with the constraints of the building. To install sensors for collecting external data, we collaborated with the building’s facilities team and tech team to assess the network environment, identify viable installation areas, and ensure compatibility with the existing infrastructure.
In the early stages, we didn’t just focus on meeting technical requirements—we explored sensor options from a creative and expressive perspective to achieve the most compelling experience. We compared the characteristics of various devices and evaluated which sensors best aligned with the artistic intent. Through site surveys and prototype testing, we determined the optimal sensor selection, placement, and network configuration.
We also tested multiple methods for video transmission. Taking into account the constraints of the building’s network environment, we worked closely with stakeholders to design the most effective transmission workflow. As a result, we developed a system that ensures both stable performance and high-quality visual output.
Throughout the development process, we worked closely with the artist to refine the schedule, ensuring a smooth workflow through iterative prototyping and development stubs. The application was built using TouchDesigner, and by integrating the TouchDesigner plugin of LMS (Live Multi Studio) we optimized the video transmission system to meet the project’s specific requirements.
To prepare for equipment installation and network setup, we coordinated with the building’s facility manager and other relevant teams to secure power supply and communication infrastructure. With long-term operation in mind, we ensured a smooth and efficient implementation.
