Ultra Athletic Nagoya

InstallationsGames

OVERVIEW

Ultra Athletic Nagoya is a themed kids' park operated by Bandai Namco Amusement, which opened on July 5, 2024, within the commercial facility "Airport Walk Nagoya."

Visitors can protect the city through play activities in a fictional base alongside Ultraman, featuring new attractions including some using large LED screens.

RESPONSIBILITIES

BASSDRUM oversaw the technical direction and development of four different types of content.

The "City Defense Simulator" is a digital attraction where players protect the city from monsters and aliens appearing on a large screen. Armed with a laser gun, they fend off the advancing threats by aiming and shooting at them.

Based on the initial concept utilizing a large screen measuring 3 meters in height and 12 meters in width, we proposed a design that took into consideration development time, the experiential aspects for children, our primary target audience, and the operational functionality and durability suitable for permanent use. Building on this foundation, we developed tools such as simulators to ensure a unique experience using the large screen, continuously refining the experience as the development progressed.

"Space Patrol" is an attraction where kids drive a spacecraft-themed car modeled after the "Space Beetle" from the Ultraman series. As they travel through space, they search for monsters and aliens hiding in meteors around Earth.

This is the third installation following the Ultra Athletic locations in Osaka and Lalaport Yokohama. In this version, images are projected onto a 3.5m x 5.5m floor space using four projectors. Sensors embedded in the steering wheel of the battery-powered cars detect coordinates and rotation, enabling players to shoot beams.

Since the sensors are located in a position easily accessible to visitors, we worked closely with Midgety Engineering, the manufacturer of the battery-powered cars, to design a structure that prevents easy access while ensuring it does not add to the daily operational burden of the staff.

The "Base Defense Simulator" is a digital attraction where players, positioned in a command center, watch a screen and rapidly press laser beam buttons to repel monsters approaching the base.

We created a simple setup using displays and physical buttons, designing the experience to be engaging for children, who are our primary target audience. To achieve this, we carefully chose durable buttons, tested their placement, and adjusted the game balance throughout the development process.

"Find the Ultra Heroes!" is a digital rally where children participate in search training within the athletic area. They use a wristwatch-like device to scan checkpoints and look for Ultra Heroes. If they don't find a hero, a monster appears on the screen instead. At the end, when they check their search results at the reception, they receive stickers of the Ultra Heroes they found.

To install equipment throughout the facility, we designed fixtures with safety in mind and developed the content system considering the operational workflow during business hours. Additionally, we built a system that allows operational staff to customize and update the content as needed.
