OVERVIEW

An interactive exhibit that lets fans direct and shoot battle scenes

This interactive experience was featured within the "EVA EXTRA 30" exhibition area at "EVANGELION:30+; 30th ANNIVERSARY OF EVANGELION," the first-ever major festival dedicated to the world-renowned Evangelion anime series.

Featuring intuitive controls and a custom iPhone-based camera, the exhibit allows visitors to experience a hands-on simulation of the actual virtual camera system used in the production of the film "Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time."

The footage captured by visitors is composited in real-time with specially re-edited scenes from the film itself. As a final cinematic touch, their names appear in the end credits alongside the official production staff. The completed video can then be downloaded via a QR code, allowing fans to take home a personalized memento of their experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical direction across the entire experience, partnering from the initial concept phase

We collaborated closely with Studio Khara, our partner and the organizer of the event, from the initial planning stages, taking charge of both the experience design within the exhibition space and the overall system’s technical direction.

Guided by their directive to utilize their digital assets, we explored various AR-based concepts. Ultimately, we developed a solution that ensured technical feasibility while translating the raw energy and passion of the actual film production environment into a hands-on experience.

We built an integrated system that seamlessly managed the entire user journey: from the initial QR code registration and iPhone camera operation to video generation, compositing, and the final download process. To balance high-quality visual output with efficient throughput, we combined ARKit for tracking camera position and rotation, Unity for rendering, and NDI for video transmission. This was supported by a distributed processing architecture, utilizing dedicated PCs for real-time rendering and separate machines for video editing and uploading.

When designing the physical experience, we conducted multiple demo tests with Studio Khara’s creative team. We meticulously adjusted details such as device mount height, user flow, and cable management. Additionally, we designed the spatial layout to broadcast the live capture on a large monitor, allowing visitors waiting in line to share in the excitement.

Finally, we established a comprehensive system monitoring and operational workflow to ensure stability. Over the three-day event, the exhibit accommodated approximately 2,000 participants. We successfully delivered a deeply immersive experience where each user’s actions were directly reflected in their video, all while maintaining smooth and uninterrupted operations.
