WORK
Live Experience Calm Down Booth
OVERVIEW
A more inclusive way to experience live music
This project explored a new way to experience live entertainment for people with sensory sensitivities or those who find crowded environments overwhelming. By allowing visitors to adjust the intensity of visual and audio stimulation, the project aimed to create an environment where they could remain connected to the atmosphere and excitement of live music events but experience them at their own pace.
Developed through a collaboration between Sony Music Solutions, Sony Creative Center, and Nomura Co. Ltd. Future Creation Laboratory, the project was inspired by feedback from individuals with developmental disabilities and sensory sensitivities. Many expressed a desire to experience the excitement and energy of live music events, but find the sensory stimulation too overwhelming to comfortably enjoy them.
While conventional calm-down spaces are typically designed as places to step away from stimulation and rest, this project reimagined the concept within the context of live entertainment. By combining Sony’s visual and audio adjustment technologies with a mobile booth system, the space was designed to support continued participation in live events at an individual’s pace, without losing the sense of presence and shared excitement unique to concert venues.
The booth was pilot-tested at the CENTRAL MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT FESTIVAL 2026 in April 2026.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical support from concept development through implementation
For this project, we provided technical support and technical direction throughout the development process.
In response to the initial concept of creating a new live entertainment experience, we proposed technical approaches for realizing the project and worked closely with the team to refine details that would shape the overall quality of the experience. Through ongoing discussion from both technical and experiential perspectives, we supported the translation of the concept into a practical and engaging system.
Alongside the development of an early prototype for pilot implementation at the event, we were also deeply involved in hardware selection and system design. By establishing a stable technical foundation for the overall system, we helped optimize the development process across the project.
During the event, the booth was experienced by individuals with sensory sensitivities, providing an opportunity to validate the project’s goal of creating a live entertainment experience that can be enjoyed by a wider range of audiences.
